
Robert Hoskins writes persuasively in his essay
Leopold the Hunter that the developer of the Land Ethic, Aldo Leopold, would have little to discuss with people who oppose hunting on ethical or "animals rights" grounds. I agree and add that armchair quarterbacks are misguided in almost any field of study worth mentioning. It's difficult to have a reasoned conversation about the environment with someone who doesn't think about it, go out into it, and experience it on a regular basis. His article makes me want to go back to
read my Leopold and then to travel on horseback in the high desert of New Mexico with him among the deer and the pines. Now back to my armchair...
