FROZE-ASS RIDE

My bike lock malfunctioned yesterday, locking my commuter bike to a bike rack at Tufts for the immediate future. That lock is tough. I estimate that it will eat at least 10 hacksaw blades before I get the bike back. Not exaggerating. At least it won't get stolen. UPDATE! OnGuard locks paid for a locksmith and a replacdement lock for me. Good company. You should buy one of their products.

So today I dusted off the Orange Crush and headed to work in the snowy streets of Somerville, Medford, and Malden. Had to wear a rain coat and rubber pants because the bike doesn't have fenders and it's "all natural" here. Halfway there I flatted the rear tire. I'm carrying the wrong size tube and no patch kit, not that rubber cement would work in the cold. I'll pump the tire up with my pump, ride a while, pump, ride, pump, ride. Then the pump breaks. Literally shattered in my hands. As Carla would say: "F." I rode the rest of the way on a flat tire and broke a drive-side spoke in the process (those of you with a spoke wrench in your tool box will understand).

Then my workday started.

I don't care how much you like your job, that's enough to make you swear at little babies playing with puppies.

Still, I had fun riding in the snow. Whole new challenge.
