...To the beige-mobile, chums!

WHO RUNS THE WORLD? I was under the impression that the UN did it's best to incorporate the views and concerns of all the member nations, not simply the nations with large GDP, large nuclear arsenals, and large chips on their shoulders. There were, in fact UN member nations that refused to join the Iraq invasion by coalition forces. Statements by Randy Scheunemann, a former advisor to the US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to the BBC in this article indicate his nation's displeasure at not being treated more equally than other nations. "I think it is outrageous for the Secretary-General, who ultimately works for the member states, to try and supplant his judgement for the judgement of the member states," he told the BBC. "To do this 51 days before an American election reeks of political interference," Randy Scheunemann said. Does Mr. Scheunemann include member states with stated positions opposing the Iraq invasion in his thinking? It appears that he does not. I submit that the UN does not, and should not, toe the Coalition party line on all issues. If it did, perhaps global women's reproductive freedoms would be foreclosed upon in the manner that the Bush administration has done in the US. Luckily, the UN's Millenium Development Goals provide a stated mission contrary to president Bush's beliefs. The world needs dissenting voices. It does not need yes-men in positions of global leadership.
