...To the beige-mobile, chums!

TREVOR JARVIS CYCLES ARE BEAUTIFUL! I've never seen bikes this intricate before! It really is a shame that more people don't ride bikes in America. People get all excited about their cars...hopping them up, making them louder, faster, stronger. All the while thier bodies get fatter and slower. It's nice to see people exhibiting pride in their craft and producing something that works simply and looks good.

There is a danger is the simple solution, however. Some problems (like obesity in America) are too complex to solve with just one solution. It's not as if more bikes will solve the problem. There are too many cities and towns that don't make thier public ways pedestrian or bike-friendly. No crosswalks, no sidewalks, tons of high-speed car traffic. The American city is purposely designed for the automobile, not for the human. Two thoughts to ponder:

  • Carl Sagan proposed this excercise:

Imagine that you are an intelligent alien life form investigating the Earth. As you approach the planet from millions of miles away, your sensors indicate that the surface is mostly water, with some land. As you get closer you see that some of the land is covered with straight lines and grids! As you get closer still, you see objects moving about on these lines and grids, stopping, starting, changing direction. A large portion of the surface is adapted to these objects. They must be the dominant life form on the planet! Closer still and you notice that still smaller objects enter and exit the larger objects when they come to rest. Parasites of some sort?

  • I don't know the author, but it's a good quote: For every complex problem there is a simple answer. And it is wrong.
Do yourself a favor and read a little about automobiles and the future of transportation (??!).
