...To the beige-mobile, chums!

Monday, January 26

So I was thinking about a cheap demo to illustrate some of the physics concepts of sound and I came up with masking tape. In truth, more explanation is unecessary, but I will indulge those with less tape experience by explaining myself. Behold! Pulling masking tape (or Duck brand tape) off the roll makes a sound. As the length of tape removed from the roll becomes greater, the pitch (frequency) of the sound drops. You inherently know this to be true. Revisit your favorite tape roll and verify this fact just the same. Although I would normally ask people to refrain from wasting things, this is in the name of discovery and is, therefore, a valid use of resources. Connections between wavelength, frequency, period, tension, adhesion, vibration, and natural frequencies can be explored... and tape is cheap. Demo completed!
