While it is true that many of the poor inhabitants of Jacob Riis' How the Other Half Lives, circa 1890 have had their fortunes improved by various social welfare programs, there still exist many people with a tough row to hoe, as it were... But there may be hope! If you want to see a glimpse of how the resistance disorganized itself in the 1960s, check out a few passages from Abbie Hoffman's Steal This Book. While some ideas seem scary and violent to me, some are an interesting window into the hippie mind. Check out the section on free pets, especially the buffalo portion. I wonder if the current Bush administration has considered reviving this program? Is it irresponsible to post links to this material on the web? Maybe.
