...To the beige-mobile, chums!

IF YOU WORKWITH KIDS, ESPECIALLY MINORITY KIDS, it would probably be preaching to the choir to read this interesting article from The Nation magazine. I often wonder if there is someone who writes about solutions to this problem rather than just identifying the problem... ** Doh! The article is only available to subscribers! Should'a checked that... It was about "Locked Down" Schools and the violence "problems" therein. Are the problems real or is it just an increasing use of police and criminal charges when working with problem behavior. Of course, the numbers break down along racial lines and the Bush administration's "No Child Left Behind" Policy is questioned as being underfunded and too focused on standardized testing. Blam, blame, blame, with no solution proposed, nor any analysis of the cultural implications of largely white administrations behaving punitively in criminal court against minority students about issues that would have been handled in-house in the past. Made me a little depressed because it's all gloom and doom. I think people can do better when working with kids.

If you don't have anything nice to say, say it loud.
